2020 was a tough year for a lot of people, and I was no exception. At the beginning of the year, I started feeling ill, but I didn’t think much of it at the time. I just figured work and the holiday season had taken its toll. However, as the weeks went on, I started feeling worse and worse. For most of that year, I suffered through debilitating symptoms that went undiagnosed until I finally found a doctor who was willing to listen and figure out what was wrong with me. By the time my illness was properly diagnosed, it had already done a lot of damage to my health. It took many more months of treatment before I started to feel better and even now, a few years later, I’m still not back to normal.
I was diagnosed with an illness that caused me a lot of pain and fatigue. Despite this, I continued to go to work every day and put in long hours. I was afraid of losing my job if I took time off, and so I kept pushing myself, even when I was clearly not well. This caused my stress levels to skyrocket, and my illness to get worse. Eventually, I reached a point where I could no longer ignore my symptoms and had to take a step back.
Shortly after I became ill, I began to gain weight. I never had a weight problem before, but the combination of medication and an almost sedentary lifestyle caused the pounds to slowly creep on. For a long time, I was content to let my body be whatever size it wanted to be. However, I now realize that being overweight was taking a toll on my overall physical health and well-being. As a result, I have decided to make this year of 2023 a personal goal to focus on growth even if that means getting out of my comfort zone to attain those goals. I know it will be a challenge, but I am determined to make healthier choices in all areas of my life.
The past few years have been tough for my physical health. First, I was misdiagnosed by a doctor which led to months of being severely ill, during a world-wide pandemic no less, being at risk of losing my career at the same time, and that really did a number on my emotional well-being also.
The experiences that I faced, not only made me realize how important it is to advocate for myself and to be proactive about my health, but it also made me more compassionate towards others who are going through similar experiences.
I feel like within the last year I’ve shifted even more toward purposeful goals. And as we all know, having a balanced lifestyle – both personally and professionally – can often feel like an elusive goal. That’s why I’m dedicated to creating an environment where you don’t have to pick between business pursuits and self-care. In fact, it is possible to take care of yourself while also growing your career and meeting goals – the two need not be mutually exclusive.
Learning to make self-care and goal setting a priority is helping me to make important changes in my life and has made me want to be a source of support for other women. It can be difficult to find space in our lives that is just for us, especially when we are juggling taking care of our families and other obligations.
I’m more passionate then ever before about empowering women to take these small steps towards self-care, knowing it can have an immense impact on how we prioritize the things that make us happy. The realization that it’s important to treat ourselves with respect while making sure our goals are in sight can often be lost in the chaos of everyday life.
I am confident that any ambitious woman can find success without having to sacrifice her well-being. I hope to make this mission of balance attainable and to be a champion of sorts for other women on a similar path!
If you’ve made it this far leave a comment and let me know what your goals are for this year! I hope that you will join me on this journey. Thank you for reading, and I look forward to sharing more of my journey and insights with you!
